Vinea works for any scenario where you need to access both local and overseas websites in your browser — smart mode keeps local sites on a direct connection with no slowdown, while overseas sites are automatically routed through the proxy, with no manual switching required.
Different use cases call for different proxy configurations. This guide covers four common scenarios with recommended settings for each.
Academic research
Typical needs: Access Google Scholar, PubMed, overseas university libraries, arXiv, and IEEE Xplore, while keeping local academic platforms and university intranets accessible at full speed.
Recommended setup:
- Mode: Smart mode
- Why: Academic research often requires switching between local and overseas resources. In smart mode, Google Scholar automatically goes through the proxy while local academic databases stay on a direct connection — no toggling needed.
Common workflow:
- Search papers on Google Scholar → automatically proxied
- Click through to publisher sites (Springer, Elsevier, etc.) → automatically proxied
- Switch to a local academic database for domestic papers → smart mode keeps it direct, no perceived switch
- Access university library intranet → direct connection (campus network ranges are in the bypass list)
Note: If your university's library system uses an uncommon domain not in the built-in bypass list, you may experience connection issues. Right-click and add that domain to the direct list to fix it.
Cross-border remote work
Typical needs: Use local workplace tools (Lark, DingTalk, WeChat Work) daily, while also needing Google Workspace, Shopify, Notion, Slack, or HubSpot.
Recommended setup:
- Mode: Smart mode
- Why: The biggest frustration for cross-border workers is "turning on the proxy slows down local tools." Smart mode keeps local workplace domains direct while routing Google Workspace, Shopify, and other overseas platforms through the proxy.
Vinea's additional advantage:
As a browser extension, Vinea only affects browser traffic. This means:
- Desktop workplace clients are completely unaffected (they don't go through the browser)
- Desktop messaging apps are completely unaffected
- Terminal and CLI tools are completely unaffected (
git push, npm install, etc. work normally)
Even if you access a local workplace tool's web version in the browser, smart mode keeps it on a direct connection — those domains are in the built-in bypass list.
Chrome Profile tip: If you manage multiple businesses that need proxy nodes in different regions, create separate Chrome Profiles for each. Each Profile has independent extension settings — one Profile on a US node, another on a Japan node, with no interference between them.
Content creation and social media
Typical needs: Browse YouTube for video references, check Instagram or X (Twitter) for trends and inspiration, access overseas design resources, while also using local platforms for content publishing.
Recommended setup:
- Mode: Smart mode
- Why: Content creators typically jump between local and overseas platforms throughout the day. Smart mode keeps both sides at optimal speed.
Common workflow:
- Browse YouTube for material → automatically proxied
- Switch to a local video platform to upload → smart mode keeps it direct
- Check trends on X (Twitter) or Instagram → automatically proxied
- Edit content on a local platform → automatically direct
When global mode is useful: If you need to browse an overseas platform as if you were in a specific region (e.g., checking YouTube's recommendation algorithm for a particular country), temporarily switch to global mode and select the corresponding region's node.
AI tools
Typical needs: Use ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Midjourney, and other overseas AI tools, while keeping local AI platforms accessible at full speed.
Recommended setup:
- Mode: Smart mode
- Why: Most overseas AI tools are accessed through the browser. Smart mode routes them through the proxy automatically, while local AI services stay on a direct connection.
Common workflow:
- Open a ChatGPT or Claude conversation → automatically proxied
- Use Perplexity for research → automatically proxied
- Switch to a local AI platform → smart mode keeps it direct
- Run code on Google Colab → automatically proxied
Note: Some AI tools have regional restrictions. If a service says your region is not supported, try switching to a node in the corresponding region within Vinea.
Configuration summary by scenario
| Scenario | Recommended Mode | Additional Setup Needed | |----------|-----------------|------------------------| | Academic research | Smart mode | Usually none; add uncommon university domains to direct list if needed | | Cross-border work | Smart mode | Usually none; add niche work platforms as needed | | Content creation | Smart mode (occasional global) | Switch to global temporarily for region-specific browsing | | AI tools | Smart mode | Usually none; switch nodes for region-locked services |
Frequently asked questions
Will Vinea slow down local workplace tools like Slack or desktop apps?
No. Vinea is a browser extension that only handles web traffic within the browser. Desktop apps like Slack, Teams, or email clients are completely unaffected. Even local workplace web apps stay on a direct connection in smart mode.
Does smart mode automatically route ChatGPT and Google Scholar through the proxy?
Yes. These overseas sites are not on the smart mode bypass list, so they automatically go through the proxy. If an overseas site is not being routed through the proxy, right-click and add it to the proxy list.
When should I switch to global mode?
When you need all browser requests to come from the same overseas IP (e.g., testing overseas e-commerce pages, registering for region-locked services), or when you are intensively browsing many overseas sites with different domains in a short time.
